A touching memory of the late Lord Peter Brooke written by Barry Walsh.
Peter, or that is what he wished to be called at the Club, was President during what was one of the busiest, hardest-pressed times of his career. However, he made sterling efforts to support St Andrew’s. On many occasions, even when the pressures of his office in Government prevented him from attending the whole event, he would slip quietly in at the back of the audience and stay late to talk to Club members and supporters. I recall more than one annual prize-giving evening when, although he missed the actual presentations, he made a point of talking to the young winners afterwards – something that made the occasion even more memorable for them.
Peter was President during my time as Club Chairman and I, along with my fellow trustees, was sincerely grateful for his supportive and ever-thoughtful counsel during what were challenging times for St Andrew’s.
On his retirement as President, we presented Peter with a St Andrew’s football shirt. Typically, instead of holding it up for photographs, he insisted on wearing it. He was proud of St Andrew's, as were we of him.
